Avignon is known to practically every French child, and this is due to the famous song that is taught in most kindergartens along the Loire River. The city is famous not only for the children's song, but also for its magnificent monuments, which are primarily due to the popes. The bridge in Avignon, made famous by the song, is also an important point on the local map. Specifically, it's the St. Benedict Bridge crossing the Rhone. The river dealt with the structure without mercy: after a flood in the 17th century. - Of the 22 spans, only four and the chapel of St. Blaise remained. The bridge in Avignon has not been rebuilt to this day, which ensures its popularity among tourists, but also artists. The structure can be found in the works of K.K. Baczynski and J. Radek, among others.
The main tourist site in the area is the Avignon Papal Palace. What did the helmsmen of the See of Peter do in this city? Mentions of the city date back to antiquity. In the Middle Ages, its importance grew, which was due, among other things, to its convenient location along trade routes. However, this French town owes its greatest prosperity precisely to the popes. Why? From 1309 to 1377, this city was the seat of the heads of the Catholic Church, thanks to Clement V, who was looking for a quieter seat. Rome was not a safe haven for church leaders at the time, so the papal seat came to Provence. A total of 7 popes and 2 antipopes held office in Avignon. The remnant of their stay in Avignon is primarily the magnificent papal palace. The huge building towers over the city. It includes several buildings (including the New Palace, the Old Palace, the Small Palace, the Cathedral) and the Rocher des Doms hill. The complex is impressive in size, but can seem a bit empty inside. This is due to the French Revolution, which had no mercy for anything related to religion and church teaching. The papal palace in Avignon did not receive a thorough renovation until the second half of the 20th century, and in 1995 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The palace is predominantly Gothic, but the neighboring Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral, which is an integral part of the papal complex, is already dominated by the Romanesque style. Its crowning glory is a column with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside the temple you will find the tombs of two popes.
Avignon is worth visiting not only for its papal legacy. Provence itself can be captivatingly beautiful, and Avignon is just one excuse for visiting this part of France. One of the central places in the city is the Clock Square. In this point begins (or ends - depends on which side you look at) its course many charming streets, where different kinds of pubs and cafes are located. Which one to choose? The decision can give you a headache, because there are really quite a lot of delightful dining establishments here. The old part of the city is separated from the newer buildings by impressive fortified walls. One of the most famous events in Avignon is the July Theater Festival. This is when the city is most crowded, and prices in hotels and restaurants can be higher than in the off-season.
