According to many people specializing in sightseeing tours, Biecz is one of the most underrated places in our country. This inconspicuous town of less than 5 000 inhabitants lies in the Małopolska province and is the seat of the urban-rural commune of Biecz. It is one of the oldest towns in the region. Baytsh is situated in the Carpathian Foothills, on the Ropa River. Due to its medieval architecture, it is sometimes referred to as the Polish Carcassonne. The town is filled to the brim with historical monuments, and it is best to start visiting it from the tourist information point located at the Market Square.
It is an ideal place for people who want to see as much as possible in a relatively short period of time. Among the medieval fortifications of the city you can admire the Corpus Christi church, one of the most valuable religious buildings in Poland. Every tourist will inevitably come across the Market Square, where you will find, among others, the Town Hall - originally Gothic, with time partly rebuilt in the classical style. Its 57-meter tower significantly stands out against the panorama of the city. In the close vicinity of the Town Hall there are interesting tenement houses. One of them houses the Museum of the Land of Biec, presenting the history of Biec and the inhabitants of the region. The other monuments which should not be missed during a visit to the Pearl of Małopolska are: the Franciscan monastery from 1624, the Holy Spirit Hospital, a former synagogue, fortifications, the Old Town, the railroad station and the house of the robber Becz.
Other noteworthy buildings are located outside Biecz. It's definitely worth the extra mile to visit: The Museum of Petroleum Industry and Ethnography in Libusza, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Binarowa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the wooden church in Rożnowice.
Biecz is a city with an impressive and colourful history. Not everyone knows that the saying "spoiled like a grandfather's whip" comes from this very name. Its explanation is as follows. In the Middle Ages, the local inhabitants were so rich that even local beggars were not satisfied with just any alms. They owed their prosperity, among others, to the trade routes passing through their town. And where there was trade, there were also robbers and the types from under the dark star. At one point, the robbery problem grew to such an extent that the army and the courts were unable to keep up with tracking, catching and judging the bandits. Therefore, the king granted Biecz the law of the sword allowing a specially appointed executioner to carry out the death penalty. The executioner, called the "master of holy justice", was hired by the rulers of Baytsh, probably for a fee, to neighbouring towns.
Biecz, although small, has an infrastructure ready to welcome guests. Among the recommended facilities there are: a hotel and restaurant "Grodzka", hotel and restaurant "Mimoza", a school youth hostel, restaurant and cafe "u Becza", guest rooms "Villa Historia", recreation center "Wczasy pod gruszy", Jolinkowo agritourism farm, agritourism at Tadek's place and agritourism New Life in Beskid.
