Bielsko-Biala is a sizable city, a former provincial town, located in the Silesian Foothills, right next to the ranges of the Little Beskid and Silesian Beskid. About 170,000 people live here. It is worth remembering that we are talking about the capital of Podbeskidzie performing important administrative, cultural, educational and industrial functions on a regional scale. Bielsko enjoys an excellent location, not far from the charming Beskids, and is well connected to other major urban centers in southern Poland, primarily Katowice, Krakow and Cieszyn. However, the natural beauty and mountain trails are not the only assets of Bielsko, as you can find out by visiting the place during your weekend sojourns.
Bielsko is a great idea for a short trip, either as a family or solo. Here you can enjoy local delicacies and stroll around the beautiful old town. The historic buildings make Bielsko-Biala known by some as Little Vienna.
One of the flagship monuments is the Sulkowski castle. The structure dates back to the 14th century (it underwent extensive reconstruction between 1855 and 1864) and looks beautiful both during the day and after dark, when the facade is illuminated. The courtyard serves occasionally as an arena for cultural events, and inside we can admire the museum collections.
Nearly to the castle is the Old Market Square - a square surrounded by 17th-18th century townhouses. Between them are the statue of St. John Nepomucen and a fountain over which Neptune reigns. In the Old Market Square we can also find the best restaurants and cafes in the city. Among the many recommendable pubs here is Café Maluch. This is a reference to the fact that Bielsko was the home of Fiat car production for many years. From the Market Square it is not far to St. Nicholas Cathedral. The church was originally finished in the Gothic style, and was later rebuilt many times.
Another important industry that influenced the industrial development of the city was the textile sector. This is evidenced by the Old Factory, a museum dedicated to the history of the local textile industry. The museum is located in the building of a former cloth factory - the property of the Buttner family.
Families visiting Bielsko with their kids should take a course to the famous Drawing Film Studio. It is here that the iconic characters that dominated the imagination of Polish children for decades were created: Bolek and Lolek, Reksio, Baltazar Gąbka. During a visit to the Studio, you can see how time-consuming it was to work on traditional animations before computers took over. Let the statue of Bolek and Lolek and the statue of Reksio, which we can come across while walking around the city, testify to how important a role the cartoon film industry played in the life of the city.
