Brodnica is a relatively small (a little over 28,000 inhabitants), but very charming, town in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. The town is considered the capital of the Brodnica Lake District, which is widely regarded as the most beautiful part of this region of Poland.
Brodnica owes its tourist reputation to its historic buildings, picturesque natural surroundings of the area and canoeing. That's right! The local rivers are considered the best place for a canoeing vacation. But let's return to the city itself. Its heart is the triangular market square, where you will find a medieval well. Another landmark of the Big Square is the soaring tower of the Gothic Town Hall. Around the city's main square crouch pastel-colored townhouses, mostly dating to the 19th century. The Old Town is surrounded by remnants of walls. In the northern part of the fortifications is the Chelminska Gate (which houses a tourist information point), while the southern wall runs past the Mazur Tower, also known as the Stork Tower (built along with the city fortifications in the 14th century).
In addition to the aforementioned monuments, Brodnica is also worth seeing the Gothic parish church of St. Catherine (the origins of its construction date back to the end of the 13th century), the post-Reformation (now Franciscan) church and monastery from the 18th century, Renaissance granary from the early 17th century, Anna Vasa's palace (rebuilt from the 20th century after a fire) and the ruins of a Teutonic castle from the 14th century. It is worth mentioning that there are three sites under the care of the Brodnica Museum: the castle, the granary and the Chelminska Gate - all of which can be visited by buying a single ticket or a pass to visit the three monuments.
The Drwęca River plays an important role in the city's landscape, with the best canoe routes running along it. In the western part of the city, there is a canoe haven on the Drwęca, managed by the local OSiR. Local residents know that kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the riches of the Brodnica Lake District. The boundaries of this micro-region are marked by four rivers: the aforementioned Drwęca, as well as the Osa, Goz and Lutrin. It's no wonder that this region of Poland is considered a dream destination for a canoe vacation. Those who have not yet had the opportunity to try spending their vacation in this way should definitely get a taste of this activity. It is not necessary to sign up for a several-day rafting trip right away. For beginners, one-day rafting trips of a few hours are a good option. The Lake District is also a paradise for anglers and hikers, who can stroll along several walking trails.
