A great treat for photography lovers is the Museum of Nicéphore Niépce, a photography pioneer, located in Chalon. Nicéphore Niépce was a French physicist and inventor. It was he who took the world's first perishable photograph, View from the Window in Le Gras in 1816. However, he tirelessly recorded the process. In 1829 he entered into collaboration with a young, feisty painter-inventor, Louis Daguerre, already popular throughout France at that time. From then on, the men continued to work together on their discovery.
Musée Nicéphore-Niépce is a place of pilgrimage for amateur and professional photographers. It houses a collection of 1,500 cameras and three million photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries, developed using a variety of processes.
Chalon-sur-Saone is also the birthplace of another famous Frenchman, Dominic Vivant Deone. It is to him that another museum in Chalon, the Musée Vivant-Denon, is dedicated. This famous French artist, diplomat and traveler befriended Napoleon and Josephine. At the age of 51 Denon went with Bonaparte, to Egypt and became a representative of the Institute d`Egypte, founded by the scientists of Napoleon's expedition. He made the first reconnaissance of the necropolis at Giza. Under his direction several hundred mummies of ibis were unearthed in Sakkara. Denon's contribution to the study of Egyptian art was also great. The reception of his works lay at the foundation of scientific Egyptology, and many of the drawings are still valuable information about defunct or ruined buildings today. Denon amassed a collection of Egyptian antiquities with which he contributed to many French museums.
Denon was a pioneer in the fields of archaeology, art history, Egyptology and museology.
The museum has a room dedicated to him, documenting his career and showing some of the engravings he made.
Another attraction worth seeing in Chalon is, located on a square in the heart of the city, the Chalon Cathedral. Although this building does not impress with its size, being rather small for a cathedral, its interior definitely does. It is a mishmash of architecture: the neo-Gothic facade and two towers date back to the 19th century, but inside there are elements that date back hundreds of years. For example, a beautiful fresco dating back to 1400 or a tapestry woven in 1510.
The cathedral is located in the central area of Chalon, just off the very busy Saint - Vincent square, filled with restaurants, cafes, bars. On weekends, the square turns into a market, and its history dates back to medieval times.
If the bustle of the busy Saint - Vincent square starts to get to you, you can take advantage of the silence of Chalon Cathedral.
Côte Chalonnaise Wine is something for connoisseurs of the wines for which all of France is famous.

The region lies on the elevated western bank of the Saône River and stretches for about 25 kilometers north and south.
Hidden within this idyllic landscape are 44 wine villages, where winemakers primarily grow pinot noir and chardonnay grapes and ferment the wine in large oak barrels.
