Cracow one of the most important cities not only in Poland, but also in Europe. The second largest city in terms of size and population after Warsaw. The area of the city is over 326km2, while its population is less than 800,000 inhabitants. For comparison, Warsaw has less than 1.8 million, the third city in terms of population is Lodz with nearly 680,000 inhabitants.
Kraków as the most important city in Poland in terms of history, also a very important scientific and business center. The first mention of Kraków dates back to 965. Kraków has been the formal capital of Poland since 1795 and is the coronation place for kings. The first coronation took place in 1320, the honor being bestowed upon Wladyslaw Lokietek. Coronations took place in Krakow until 1734. A little earlier, in 1611, the royal court of Sigismund III Vasa was moved to Warsaw, but Krakow remained the formal capital of the Third Polish Republic until the last partition of Poland. Unfortunately, with the collapse of the Commonwealth came the decline of the city, the first destruction of the city was in 1655 during the Swedish Deluge. In the 18th century. Krakow was conquered by Prussian, Swedish, Austrian and Russian armies. In 1974 the Kościuszko Uprising took place, but after the Third Partition of Poland (1795) Krakow was occupied by the Austrians. The later history of the city was also difficult, including the time of occupation during World War II, the city was plundered, monuments (including those of Adam Mickiewicz) were destroyed. The pages of the city's history from modern times are much more kind to Krakow. It was here that the Visegrad Group summits took place in 1991 and 1993, and in 2000 Krakow became the European Capital of Culture. In 2009 the NATO ministers congress took place here, and in 2016 World Youth Day took place here.
In 2012 Krakow was recognized as one of the 120 most attractive cities in the world, because Krakow is not only an important historical center, but also a business center. It is here that large corporations have their headquarters, it is an important and stable business center. Finally, Krakow is an extremely important place on the tourist map of Poland. In 2000, Krakow was the first city in Poland to be recognized as the European Capital of Culture. In 2006, the city was recognized as one of the most popular cities in Poland, as well as in Europe. According to the data, in 2019 Krakow was visited by as many as 14 million tourists, mainly Poles but also the British, Germans, Italians, French and Spaniards, counting according to the number of tourists. Tourists value the city for its historical and business values. Religious tourism is also an important destination.
The most important monuments of the city include the Royal Castle, Old Town (listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List), St. Anne's Collegiate Church and Kazimierz (also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List).
