Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland and one of the richest in the world. Picturesquely situated on the shores of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps, it surprises tourists with its beauty, wealth of interesting sites and friendly people. French-speaking Geneva is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. It is here that the United Nations has its European headquarters, and the World Health Organization and the Red Cross have their headquarters.

What is worth seeing in Geneva? What attractions shouldn't be missed?

The symbol of the city is the Jet d'Eau, a fountain on the shores of Lake Geneva, whose water jet reaches a height of 140 meters. At night it is beautifully illuminated. This fountain on Lake Geneva has no equal in Europe. A gentle mist envelops tourists strolling along the waterfront, who mostly take their first steps in Geneva here.

The undisputed heart of Geneva is the Old Town with the Saint-Pierre Cathedral dominating it. The building is more than 850 years old, and John Calvin himself preached there.  The north tower of this three-nave basilica offers a unique view of the entire city and the lake. It is here that the Place du Bourg-de-Four, the oldest square in Geneva, is located. The old town is also a shopping district with elegant stores.

It is no secret to anyone that Geneva is called the city of clocks. It is the birthplace of the Swiss watchmaking industry, and 72 companies have their seats here. It is worth going to the Patek Philippe Museum, where you can see more than 2,000 unique exhibits and learn about the history of the manufacturer of some of the most expensive watches in the world. Interestingly, the founders of the company were two Polish émigrés: Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek.

Geneva is also home to numerous parks. The largest is the Parc de la Grange, and it features a rose garden, historic buildings, and the ruins of an ancient villa. It is interesting to note that even in summer there are not many people in it.

One of the more popular places in Geneva is the Bains des Pâquis bathing area. It sits on an artificial peninsula topped by a small lighthouse, opposite the Jet d'Eau fountain.

Turkish bath and hammam are available year-round for an additional fee, and from September to May there is also a sauna. It's hard to believe that all this can be experienced in the center of Geneva.

The Palais des Nations, the European headquarters of the United Nations, and the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent are also worth seeing. The Red Cross was initiated by Swiss businessman and philanthropist Henri Dunan. The organization was founded in 1863 and has been directing its activities from Geneva ever since.

There are more than 30 museums in Geneva so this city is also a paradise for art connoisseurs. These include the Voltaire Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Ethnographic Museum or the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. There's something for everyone.

Unquestionably, one thing not to miss while in Geneva is a trip to Mount Saleve. Mount Saleve (Mont Salève) is sometimes called Geneva's home mountain or Geneva's balcony. It is located on French territory, but the foothills can easily be reached by city bus. There are trails leading to the top, as well as a convenient cable car.
