Gizycko is a town in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship located between lakes Kisajno and Niegocin, in the heart of the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes. Giżycko is also the capital of Polish sailing and a major port in Masuria. Cruises to the most interesting places in the area start from here.
.However, Gizycko is not only beautiful lakes, forests and diverse fauna. It is also interesting monuments and attractions not found anywhere else. Below we describe the most interesting ones.
The Rotating Bridge on the Luczanski Canal is one of Giżycko's biggest attractions and the only one of its kind in Poland. It was built in 1898 and has continued to be manually operated ever since.
Under this name lies a 19th-century historic star-shaped military facility spread over nearly 100 hectares. It was built by order of the King of Prussia, Frederick William IV, to exercise control over the strategic isthmus between the Niegocin and Kisajno lakes. Walking around the fortress, one can see, among other things, an exhibition of weapons, a stable with a coach house and an armorer's workshop. Every year the Boyen Fortress Festival is celebrated here, during which historical reconstructions, concerts and other cultural events are organized.
The castle is located on the Luczanski Canal, near the Revolving Bridge. It was built around 1341, but only the two-story residential wing has survived to the present day. It has undergone many reconstructions over the years. Today, this reconstructed castle houses the "Hotel St Bruno" with rooms styled as castle chambers.
The hill provides beautiful views of the city and its surroundings. You can get there by following the walking route from the Rotary Bridge, or by taking the path along the shores of the lake and the railroad tracks. The hill has an observation tower and a cross commemorating St. Bruno, bishop, martyr and patron saint of Warmia.
The Luczanski Canal, also known as the Gizycki Canal, is the third longest canal in Mazury (it is 2130 meters long). It was created in the 18th century on the initiative of Prussian authorities to connect Lake Niegocin with Kisajn. The canal is quite a popular section of the water route from Gizycko to Wegorzewo, as well as a good place for fishing and walking.
.This pier is the second largest in Poland, after the pier in Sopot - it measures almost 407 meters in length. You can get to it by walking on an approximately 71-meter footbridge from the Port Passage located near the center. Thanks to an elevator, the promenade can also be used by people in wheelchairs. The pier provides beautiful views of Lake Niegocin and the Ekomarina, while also acting as a breakwater protecting Gizycko's harbor. Next to it is a municipal beach with a free guarded bathing area operating in season, water equipment rentals, and volleyball and basketball courts.
When visiting the Mazury region, it is impossible not to take advantage of at least one of the cruises offered by the Mazury Shipping Company. You can choose from short to even several hours long routes, during which you can learn a lot about the local history, fauna and flora.
The cruise is a great way to get to know the region.
