Gniezno is located in the eastern part of the Greater Poland province, about halfway between Poznan and Inowrocław. It is about 65 kilometers from the regional capital. Its convenient location in relation to other major urban centers is not Gniezno's only asset. Its primary asset is, of course, its historical legacy. More about it in a moment. It is worth remembering that Gniezno is located in the Greater Poland Lakeland, making it a perfect base for exploring the surrounding natural attractions - rivers, lakes and forest complexes. Particularly lovely are the areas of Lednicki Landscape Park and Powidzki Landscape Park.
Elementary school students in one of their first history lessons learn that Gniezno was the first capital of Poland and the first ecclesiastical metropolis in our country. The city is also famous as a place where the cult of St. Adalbert is particularly important. Its apogee takes place on April 23, when an indulgence and procession with the saint's relics takes place here. The relics are stationed in the local Archcathedral on a daily basis. The Gothic temple is worth seeing for several reasons. One of them is the famous Gniezno Doors from the 12th century. - cast in bronze, the two wings are considered to be a masterpiece of Romanesque folk art. The Archcathedral of the Assumption is located on Lech Hill. It is the site where the first settlement was located at the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries. A significant town was built around it, which in time became the capital of Poland at that time. You can learn more about the history of those times at Gniezno's Museum of the Origins of the Polish State. Another important museum, this time focusing on sacred art, is the Gniezno Archdiocese Museum. Lovers of the search for the sacred should also direct their steps to the Franciscan Church and St. John's Church. If, on the other hand, you belong to those who are interested in transportation, Gniezno has a visit to a steam locomotive depot.
