Goleniow is a city located in the western part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It lies on the banks of the Ina River, on the Pobrzeże Szczecińskie. Considering the fact that Goleniow, in terms of population - since the 1990s the town has been inhabited by just over 22,000 people - is only tenth in the province, the town does not give the impression of significance. Especially since thirty-five kilometers to the southwest lies, it would seem, the much more interesting Szczecin.
It should be emphasized, however, that Goleniów was quite significant from a historical perspective, which makes it interesting even today, if only as a tourist destination.
The first traces of settlement date back to the fourth century BC. Later, a dense settlement network was established around the area of today's Goleniow, and urn cemeteries appeared in the area of Zolwia Blota and Stawno.
First mentions of Goleniow appeared in the 1320s. At first they referred to the town as Golinog, later the names Golenoge and Golnowe were used. The settlement was established on the Ina River in the tenth century in a bend of the river. It was supposed to supply the princes of Szczecin with tar, tars, honey and fish. It was an important trading point especially on the water route.
Goleniów was granted city rights in 1268. This gave the city numerous privileges. All this caused Goleniow to develop over the next century. In 1368 it was annexed to the Hanseatic League.
Most of Goleniow's tourist attractions are military architecture. Noteworthy among them are the defensive walls, erected in place of earlier wooden fortifications. They were built in the fifteenth century. Later, four entrance gates and towers were also erected. Today only the towers, a gate and a few fragments of the wall exist.
The Goleniowska Forest, which covers an area of about six hundred and thirty square kilometers, certainly deserves special mention. Eighty percent of the area is coniferous forests, mainly pine. The rest of the forest is made up of deciduous trees - beech and alder, which are the primary species appearing in the swampy environment.
The forest is inhabited by numerous animals. On the territory of the Goleniowska Forest you can find roe deer, wild boar, white-tailed eagle, common buzzard and red kite. Sometimes there are also moose and gray wolves, although of course it is impossible to meet the latter.
The bus station in Goleniow is located on Jozef Pilsudski Square, right next to the railway station. There are bus shelters at the PKS station, but in case of inclement weather you can use the waiting room at the railroad station, located literally a dozen meters away.
The Goleniów shopping mall - Mini Park - is also located nearby. If you have any questions about shuttle buses from Goleniow bus station, you can call, for example, 91 418 27 84. From Goleniow our buses will take you mainly to Ukrainian cities. You will find more details below.
