There is no shortage of beautiful pictures of Grenoble on the Internet. However, they do not reflect the real charm of this city. In reality it looks even more beautiful.
Grenoble is a picturesque town at the foot of the Chartreuse Mountains, the Vercors range and the Alps piled up to the east, with a historic old town and the main attraction - la Bastille hill - from the top of which we can admire fabulous views of the whole area.
This city of over 150,000 people is called the capital of the French Alps and the "small-big city". The focal points here are the Place Grenette and Place St. Andrew. It is at them that the most recommendable monuments are located, primarily: the Cathedral of Notre Dame from the twelfth century, the twelfth-century church of St. Andrew, the eleventh-century church of Saint Laurent built by the first Christians, and the eleventh-century Palace of Justice.
Along the river Isere there is a promenade with picturesque houses. There is also a great treat for all art lovers - the museum at Place de Lavalette. We can admire the richest collection of sculptures and paintings of famous painters: Rubens, Chagall, Leger, Matisse, Modigliani, and Picasso. And the Museum de Peinture et de Sculpture has - just after Paris - one of the richest collections of contemporary art in France.
You can spend time here very actively thanks to 320 km of bicycle paths and more than 20 parks. In each of the parks you will find equipment to exercise, you will also be able to take a picnic overlooking the snowy Alps, which seem to be at your fingertips. It is also a paradise for lovers of mountain climbing. You can find many very well prepared and protected rocks.
While in Grenoble, it is worth visiting one of the oldest cafes in the city Cafe de la Table Ronde. The cafe was built in 1739 and hosted many famous artists and writers such as Stendhal, Rousseau, Chopin.
The biggest attraction of Grenoble is the Bastille Hill (Fort de la Bastille). It is a hillside historic fort whose main purpose was to protect the city and its surroundings from outside attacks. It is worth making a trip to its top. There is a large observation deck, art center, restaurants. Climbing to the top takes about 40-60 minutes, depending on the route you choose. You can climb the steep stairs or go up the sloping road. There is one more possibility to get to the top of the hill - by the oldest cable car in the whole France (built in the 30s of the 20th century). Closed in a glass ball we can count on an equally beautiful panorama. At the top, the views are fabulous. Nothing no wonder the fort is visited by more than half a million tourists annually. On a clear day from this place we can see even the highest peak of the Alps - Mont Blanc (4792 meters above sea level).
At the top of Bastille Hill there is a professional rope park with ropes and bridges attached at the very top of the fort, as well as a tyrolean. There is also a beautiful garden at the foot of the Bastille called Jardin des Dauphins. It is a walking garden located by the river Isere, from where we can admire the enormity of the fort and the bronze horse statue of Philis de La Charce.
Today Grenoble is famous for its electronics and chemical industries. It is also home to nuclear research and nanotechnology. It is home to three universities (the oldest of which has been operating since 1339), a polytechnic and a school of management. More than 60,000 students are educated in these universities.
