The setting sun gives the granaries located on the Vistula River an amazing color. So it is worth taking a walk in the late afternoon to see these amazing sights. Located on the European Route of Brick Gothic, Grudziadz boasts several remarkable monuments and yet it is still quite intimate.
Granaries
Grudzidz became an important center for grain trade, the effects of which are still visible today in the form of a complex of granaries stretching along the Vistula River's Błonia, a popular tourist and local sight - this characteristic panorama of Grudziadz, additionally created by the Water Gate and the towers of the parish church and the Jesuit College, is one of the most beautiful showpieces of Polish cities, especially attractive when viewed from the other side of the Vistula River.
The Old Town
Grudziądz was a part of the state of Mieszko I, but as a result of the division of Poland it fell into the hands of Konrad Mazowiecki, and then, thanks to the efforts of Teutonic diplomacy, it ended up in the hands of the Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Knights founded the town in 1291 under Chelmno law - just like in the case of Toruń and Chelmno.
Today the small market square is surrounded by nicely restored colourful houses, which unfortunately are mainly reconstructions of buildings existing before World War II. The Old Town Square has been renovated and the streets leading away from the square are lined with cozy cafes and restaurants. Very charming is the alley with colorful umbrellas-even in the rain, or maybe especially then, it looks very positive.
The Teutonic Castle Ruins and Klimek Tower
Built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, the castle unfortunately did not survive to our times. At the turn of the 18th and 19th century the building was demolished by order of the Prussian king, and the material obtained in this way was used to erect a fortress in Grudziadz, as well as buildings in the city. Thanks to the intervention of the Prussian marshal the Klimek tower survived and became the town's souvenir of the castle, attracting strollers to the town park. In 1945, German troops retreating from the city blew up the tower, which was not rebuilt until 2014. Nowadays, it serves as a tourist attraction and an excellent viewpoint over Grudziądz and the Vistula valley. In addition, thanks to the archaeological work conducted, relics of the former castle were uncovered, leaving them as a so-called "permanent ruin".
Museum in Grudziadz
It is located in the Old Town, in the monastery buildings, granaries and the so-called Abbesses' Palace. In addition to the opportunity to enter the granaries and see them from the inside, the museum has several permanent exhibitions. Among others, there is an archaeological section presenting excavations from Roman times to the Middle Ages from Grudziadz and its surroundings; the history of the town from the times of the Teutonic Knights, through the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Prussian partition to the return of the town to independent Poland and, as the third part, a section devoted to the Grudziadz Cavalry School.
Bike enthusiasts will love Grudziadz at first sight. It is through Grudziądz that the Vistula Bicycle Route runs. The ride along the Vistula escarpment from the Citadel towards the granaries is extremely picturesque. This view in Grudziadz is definitely worth seeing!
