Despite its relatively small size, Helsingborg attracts many tourists. This has to do with its location on the Strait of Sund, but also with the interesting sights and attractions it offers. So what to see in this Swedish city?
.This oldest city square in Helsingborg, dating back to the 17th century, is surrounded by historic townhouses, numerous restaurants and cafes. It is shaped like a wide boulevard, 35 meters wide and 250 meters long. The beautifully ornate, neo-Renaissance town hall (Radhuset) present here dates from the early 20th century, although its appearance is more like that of a grand castle, several hundred years old.
This tower is a remnant of a 12th-century fortress used to defend the city, but also to collect customs duties from vessels passing through the Sunda Strait. From it one can enjoy views of the surrounding area. A long, 146-step terraced staircase (Terrasstrapporna) leads up to the tower.
.Bordering the Kärnan tower is a park that was built on the ruins of a former fortress. It is maintained in the English style, with extensive lawns, ponds and numerous clusters of trees, although it also has a section with a rose garden, flower beds and ornamental shrubs. In addition, there are a playground and a small open stage where concerts or performances are often held.
.This is the oldest church in Helsingborg - it was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. With the 15th century, it lived to see reconstruction into a three-nave Gothic brick church. Its interior features include a 14th-century baptismal font and a 15th-century altarpiece in the form of a polyptych depicting scenes from the life of the Holy Family.
The Fredriksdal Gardens, with a total area of 36 hectares, showcases mainly local vegetation, as well as natural meadows, pastures and orchards and gardens maintained in various styles. You can meet horses, cows, sheep or chickens on the grounds, as well as see old rural buildings. There is a museum with interesting expositions, where you can learn a lot about, among other things, photography, graphics, old vehicles or see how the interiors of noble manor houses used to look like.
Under this name is a place full of terrariums and aquariums with reptiles, spiders or fish. Walking around it, you can feel the atmosphere of the rainforest, see the coral reef up close or watch the herds of lemurs. At Tropikariet, visitors can stroke selected species of snakes or crocodiles, and older children have the unique opportunity to become caretakers of local animals for a day.
This spa park was established in 1707, when it was observed that the water from the Ramlös spring had health-promoting properties and was particularly rich in iron. In the 19th century, another spring with alkaline water was discovered here. While in the area, take a stroll through the park and its surroundings, as you will come across some beautiful 19th-century buildings.
