Kolomyia is a city located in western Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, on the Prut River, the seat of the Kolomyia District. A center of engineering, metal, light, food, wood and paper industries.
The name of Kolomyia has to do with the founder of the city, King Koloman of Halychia. The town was mentioned in 1240 and belonged to the Halych-Volyn principality. In the middle of the 14th century, it was incorporated into Poland.
Walking around the city, it is impossible not to hit the Easter egg museum - for in front of the building stands a huge, 13-meter orange Easter egg. The collection of the Museum of Easter Eggs includes more than 12 thousand colorful eggs, decorated with various techniques and motifs, coming not only from Ukraine but from around the world. Easter eggs can not only be admired, but we can also learn about the methods of decorating eggs, and even try our hand at this intricate craft. This is the only museum of its kind in the whole world!
While visiting Kolomyia, it is worth visiting the Museum of History of the City of Kolomyia. If you like history or you are visiting Ukraine in search of Polish traces this museum is an ideal place. Kolomyia used to be on Polish territory, but the historical turmoil of the Partitions of Poland and the subsequent World Wars meant that since 1991 the city has been part of Ukraine. The National Museum of Hutsul and Pokucie Folk Art is one of the biggest attractions in the city and is definitely worth a visit. You can take a close look at almost 50 000 exhibits connected with everyday life of Hutsuls - highlanders living in Romanian and Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Mountains. It is worth paying attention to the elements of old equipment of Hutsul huts, beautifully decorated clothes, artistically worked wooden elements or embroidered goods. In the 19th century the School of Pottery was established in Kolomyia, which trained potters and tile makers - their amazing works, apart from the fact that now we can admire them at the exhibition, were even sent to the court in Vienna. An additional attraction is the opportunity to buy local handicrafts, make your own jug or listen to traditional music.
