Legnica is a medium-sized city located in southwestern Poland, less than 80 km west of the Lower Silesian province's capital, Wrocław. Other larger towns located in the region are: Lubin, Walbrzych, Boleslawiec, Jelenia Gora and Swidnica. The population of Legnica is less than 100 thousand people. In the years 1975-1998 the town was the capital of the former Legnica Voivodeship. Two rivers flow through the town: Kaczawa and Czarna Woda. Public transport in the town is provided by buses, including modern, electric ones. The town has a well-developed network of bus stops, so it is safe to say that in Legnica transport is a convenient means of getting around for tourists and locals alike. Intercity connections are provided by private carriers running buses and coaches. There is also a railroad line running through Legnica, connecting the town with other towns in the Lower Silesian Voivodship (Koleje Dolnośląskie) and towns in other parts of the country (PKP company). Speaking of transport solutions, the vicinity of the A4 freeway has a great impact on the mobility of the inhabitants and guests. It is one of the main thoroughfares of the country, connecting the eastern and western border and determining the way of organising transport in Legnica.
Many people may associate Legnica with the copper industry. Indeed, the city is the center of the Legnica-Głogów Copper Belt, which includes among others KGHM S.A. - one of the largest state-owned companies. However, it does not change the fact that the city's identity is not only connected with the 20th century industry. The roots of Legnica go back to the Middle Ages, and one can still admire architectural objects originating from different epochs, starting from the 13th century. The most important monuments of the town include: Piast Castle with a chapel, St. Mary's Church and St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral, fragments of the defensive walls, burgher tenements with a complex of "herring stalls", St. John's Church with a former Jesuit college. Speaking of what Legnica still has to offer, it is impossible to omit: Mausoleum of the Silesian Piasts, the Copper Museum, the Knights' Academy, the theater, the New Town Hall or the seat of the Legnica Public Library.
It is worth noting that the town was part of the command and barracks of Group North of the Soviet Army, which was stationed in Legnica from the end of World War II until 1993.Between 1984 and 1991, the Supreme Command of the Army of the Western Direction was stationed in Legnica. This was the command of the USSR Armed Forces of the strategic level of the area of central and western Europe, dealing with combat planning in case war broke out in this part of the continent.
Add that all keytourist attractions of Legnica are located in Downtown, near the train station and the bus stop served by Sindbad buses. This location of the sights makes it significantly easier to explore Legnica on foot, without having to have your own means of transportation or use cab services. The convenient location of the bus stop also makes it much easier for out-of-towners considering visiting Legnica on their own by bus or train to organize their trip.
