Leszno - a city in Poland, in Greater Poland Voivodeship. Leszno is located between Poznań and Wrocław. It also lies near Zielona Góra in Lubuskie Province. The city has about 65,000 inhabitants.
First mentions of Leszno date back to the 14th century, and it was granted city rights in 1547.
The city's location is undoubtedly very attractive. Vast terrains, long distances from civil airports, long distances from populated cities caused that the Leszno airport has hosted many times the best glider pilots in the world. Interestingly, the World Gliding Championships were held as early as in 1958, with Józef Cyrankiewicz himself taking part in the opening ceremony.
For the town and its inhabitants, speedway racing is undoubtedly important. It is here, in the speedway arena, that some of the best riders in Poland - the riders of the Leszno Union - race. It is the rivalry with other recognized speedway clubs that electrifies the town's inhabitants. Local club, next to clubs from Gorzow, Lublin or Zielona Gora is one of the best in the country.
For strollers we recommend the market square. On its square stands a beautiful, characteristic town hall.
