Located in the western part of Ukraine, Lviv stands as one of its most beautiful cities. It has an unusual climate and a rich history. It is located near the border of our country - only about 70 km from the nearest border crossing called Korczowa-Krakowiec (near Przemysl). Lviv, is not only a bygone Poland and one of the main cities of former Galicia. Today, it's a thriving and modern center of Ukraine, changing for the better year by year, alive 24 hours a day in the summer. It's countless monuments and distinctive atmosphere. There are so many attractions here that they are a magnet for tourists.
The Old City - listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.It is a historic architectural complex . In the center of the district is the Market Square, where the historic City Hall (neoclassicism) is located. The multicolored townhouses located along it represent the most diverse architectural styles. There are as many as 44 of them, and each one is unique. Worth noting is the Black Tenement House.
When visiting Lviv's market square, look around carefully, as each corner of it is another historical curiosity. It is dominated by the Latin Cathedral built in the Gothic style. Lviv has more religious monuments, such as the Armenian Cathedral, St. George's Cathedral and St. Andrew's Church. And across the southwest corner of the square you can see the Metropolitan Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the site of Lviv's weddings. Some of the old fortifications have also been preserved. On the eastern side we can see the Powder Tower the Arsenal buildings and the Royal Arsenal. Next to these representative parts of the city are several famous historical monuments: to King Daniel Halytsky, Adam Mickiewicz and Taras Shevchenko.
Only a hill and a piece of one wall survive from the former Castle. The wooded area is an excellent vantage point and a place for walks for Lviv residents. In the vicinity of the High Castle we can see the Palace of the Latin Archbishops, St. Casimir's Church and the Monastery of the Sisters of Mercy.
From the most important monuments located in the western districts of Lviv, we should mention the Yanivsky Cemetery, where many Poles are buried (including defenders of the city from the battles of 1918-20).
On the southwestern side is the most important Uniate temple of Lviv, i.e. St. George's Cathedral, built in the late Baroque style.
Slightly closer to the center we can see two buildings related to the Polish history of the city. The former Potocki Palace now houses the Lviv Art Gallery. The nearby St. Agnes Church once housed the Ossolinsky National Institute.
Frequently visited by tourists is the Lviv Brewery and Brewing Museum located northwest of the Old City on Browarna Street.
Lviv is also home to one of the oldest cemeteries in Europe - Lychakiv Cemetery, where, in addition to many notable Poles (such as Maria Konopnicka, Gabriela Zapolska), the Lviv Eaglets - very young defenders of the city - are buried.
Lviv can also be a great base for exploring Ukraine. In the immediate vicinity, we can visit Bruno Schulz's city of Drohobych, Polish palaces in Olesko and Podhorce, a castle in Zloczow or castle ruins in Stary Siol.
