Metz is a city in the northeastern part of France, it is also the capital of a region called Lorraine.
The city was founded back in Roman times on the Moselle River. The history of the city has been a difficult one, with the city repeatedly passing from French to German hands and vice versa. Before World War II, the French built the so-called Maginot Line, it was a line of fortifications and fortifications protecting the French territory from the Third Reich. Remnants of the fortifications stretch all the way to Metz from under the Luxembourg border. Unfortunately, the fortifications did not do much good, as the Germans entered France from Belgium and the city came under German rule again. The fortifications built by the French were later used by the Germans when they used them to defend against the Allied invasion of Normandy. After a long struggle, the city was liberated by General Patton's troops in 1944.
Writing about Metz, one should also recall the figure of Robert Schuman, a Luxembourg-born politician, a prominent politician, he was, among other things, foreign minister and twice prime minister of France. Schuman although born in Luxembourg, lived most of his life in Metz. He is considered the father of today's European Union. How did this happen? Well, Schuman signed an agreement with the German chancellor in 1950 on the management of the coal and steel industry in the Ruhr area. This is how the European Coal and Steel Community was established, whose successor became the European Community, and since 2009 the European Union.
Metz is a nice town recommended for walkers. The stop is located at the Monument aux Morts Avenue Joffre, Avenue Ney. From there you will walk in less than 15 minutes to St. Stephen's Cathedral. The beautiful and monumental building, 136 meters high, is the second tallest church in France, the nave being 42 meters high. It is a distinctive building in the center of the city, certainly worth a look. Built of yellow limestone it is visible from a distance, you will certainly notice when approaching from our bus stop.
