Mielec is a city located in the Sandomierz Basin in Subcarpathian Voivodeship. The Wisłoka River, a tributary of the Vistula, flows through it. It is the second largest city in the province in terms of population, with 60,000 residents.
.The city was founded in the 13th century, gained city rights in 1470 and began to develop as an important economic center. For centuries it was mainly famous for its crafts and trade. After World War I, Mielec became part of the Central Industrial District, which resulted in the establishment of the State Aviation Works. During World War II, many tragic events took place in and around Mielec, of which many traces remain to this day. In 1995, the city became part of the Euro-Park Mielec Special Economic Zone.
What to see in Mielec? The most important and interesting attractions are described below.
.The market is laid out on a rectangular plan measuring 100 by 87 meters. Since the beginning of its functioning, i.e. since the 15th century, it has fulfilled the classical role of the center of economic and social life. Its decoration is a tenement house with a dome from the early 20th century.
This historic palace became the property of the Count Oborski family in the late 19th century, who decided to rebuild it. They added a new part to the old manor house, dating back to the late 18th century, built on the ruins of a Renaissance knight's castle of the Gryfit family-Mielecki, and merged the whole into a single block. The mansion now houses the Regional Museum with its rich archaeological and city history collections, as well as an exhibition of paintings by, among others, Wojciech Kossak, and 19th and 20th century furniture and furnishings.
This Baroque temple was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. There was already a church there - the first mention of it dates back to 1470. Inside, it is worth seeing two Rococo side altars, a pulpit, altars in the chapels, a baptismal font or a choir from the late 18th century. In 2006 the temple was raised to the dignity of a basilica minor.
In this place you can see more than 5,000 objects related to the history and development of photography, as well as many photographs and negatives. The museum is located in the 20th-century Jadernowka manor house that once belonged to a famous photographer from Lviv, August Jaderny. Photography enthusiasts are sure to be delighted.
.This is a less than 185-meter hill located in the center of Mielec. A forest park has been created on the mountain with two slides and a large-area plaza, a small amphitheater and an artificial lighted stream. There are also many walking and biking paths, viewpoints, and an almost 116-meter-long toboggan run. The park naturally connects to the Sandomierz Forest, a large forest complex stretching from Tarnobrzeg to Rzeszow. The Cyranowska Mountain Forest Park is a great place for recreation for both locals and tourists visiting the city.
.The Wisloka River is a right tributary of the upper Vistula River amounting to 164 kilometers. It is a mountain river, practically along its entire length running through the picturesque corners of the Low Beskids. Choosing to go rafting on the Wisloka, one can choose from shorter, one-day sections of 14 to 20 kilometers, to longer routes dedicated to seasoned kayakers.
The Wisloka River is a river of great beauty.
