Mulhouse (Miluz) is the capital of southern Alsace and lies on the border of three countries: France, Germany and Switzerland. Better known by its French name Mulhouse, it is the second largest and most populous city in Alsace. The name comes from the German word Mühlhausen meaning mills, and the mill wheel itself is the city's symbol to this day. It is a fairly little-known French town therefore it would seem that it has little to offer. Nothing could be further from the truth. That's why it's worth finding the time to take a look here.

As a forerunner of the industrial revolution in France, Mulhouse first developed the textile industry, and later also the chemical and mechanical industries. Today, PSA Peugeot Citroën, with more than 10,000 employees, is the largest employer in Alsace. Its industrial past, rich in tradition, has laid the foundation for a whole series of significant museums that have earned the city the title of "European capital of museums of technology." Prominent among these is the National Automobile Museum (Schlumpf collection). Every July, Mulhouse becomes a mecca for old-timers with its Historic Vehicle Parade. 

Mulhouse's old town is relatively small and is actually limited to a dozen or so streets spread around the Place de la Réunion, but it has been carefully restored. The town hall impresses with its colorful Renaissance Revival style, and the Church of St. Étienne is famous for its stained glass windows dating back to the 14th century. The centerpiece of the historic part of the city is certainly the Temple Saint-Étienne, commonly known as the cathedral, towering over the rest of the buildings. Its main 97-meter tower houses the largest collection of bells in all of Evangelical France. 

However, what Mulhouse is primarily famous for are its museums. Although the city has a population of about 100,000 there is a plethora of them, and all of them are perfectly in keeping with Mulhouse's industrial history. It is impossible not to mention the Cité du Train, the largest railroad museum in the world. Two huge halls house exhibits documenting the history of the French railroad in particular. 

Another important museum on Mulhouse's map is the Cité de l'Automobile, the National Automobile Museum. It is the largest museum of its kind in the world, with more than 400 classic cars in its collection. Among them, for example, an 1893 Benz Type Victoria with a 1-cylinder engine producing 4.5 horsepower and accelerating up to 20 kilometers per hour, and masterpieces from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, including Rolls Royce, Mercedes and Bugatti. Also noteworthy is the cherry Isotta-Fraschini Berline Type 8A, which  was Rudolph Valentino's favorite model and starred in "Sunset Boulevard". 

Another museum very much associated with Mulhouse's history is the Musée de l'Impression sur Etoffes, the Textile Museum. Also worth a look is Le Musée EDF Electropolis, or the Museum of Electricity. And if that's not enough for someone, you can also visit the Wallpaper Museum, La Grange à Bécanes presenting a collection of motorcycles,  Historical Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art or Eco-museum which is a kind of open-air museum presenting the heritage of Alsace.  

There are also the Botanical and Zoological Garden, the Wesserling Park and the Salvator Park which is the oldest municipal park in Mulhouse. Among the vantage points one should certainly mention the 106-meter-high Tower of Europe (la Tour de l'Europe), which houses a panoramic restaurant with a revolving floor, or the Tower of Belvedere (la Tour du Belvédère), a 20-meter-high tower standing on the Rebberg hill allowing one to see not only the Vosges or Black Forest, but also - on nicer days - the Swiss Alps.
