Before answering the question of what to see in Naples, we will take a look at some facts about this city. Naples is Italy's third largest city (after Rome and Milan) and the largest urban center on the western coast of the Italian peninsula. It is an important point on the map of Italy in terms of tourism, business and culture. In popular opinion the city does not have the best fame - it is associated, among others, with the mafia and strikes of cleaning services. All negative associations are dispelled by a personal visit to Naples, which captivates tourists with its views, historical wealth, Italian hospitality and culinary offer.
One anecdote says that there are so many monuments in Naples that some of them must have gone underground. This, of course, is a reference to the numerous catacombs, tunnels, aqueducts and underground cemeteries for which the capital of Campania is famous. Today's Naples is a bustling metropolis of just under a million people and one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting Italy. The list of historic monuments in Naples is so extensive that it could be the basis for a lengthy travel guide. Such "monumental" prosperity is influenced, among others, by the very rich history of the city, which was founded in the 8th century BC. The diversity of cultural heritage that we can experience in Naples, let's testify to the fact that over the centuries the city was ruled by the Romans, Andegavians, Spaniards, Austrians, French, and during World War II, during which the city's buildings suffered many losses, Naples was also occupied by the Germans.
Visiting all the sights of Naples can be a real challenge. You should start exploring the city from the most representative points. These certainly include the modernist post office building, the Nuovo Castle, the Royal Palace and the neo-Renaissance Umberto I Gallery. Naples, like other Italian metropolises, boasts numerous religious buildings. Among the most famous churches guidebooks mention the following objects: the Cathedral of the blood of St. Januarius, the Convent of St. Clare, the Church of the Gesù Nuovo (Trinità Maggiore). The number of temples is probably not inferior only to museums. Among the most important museums of Naples are: Sansevero Chapel, the Italian Art Museum and the National Gallery and the National Archaeological Museum. As we mentioned, there is plenty to see underground in Naples as well. Tourists are magnetized, among others, by the catacombs of St. Gaudioso, the catacombs of St. Januarius and the shelters of Napoli Sotterranea or Galleria Borbonica.
One of the largest cities in southern Italy tempts with attractions, but from the Polish perspective it seems to be quite distant. How to get there? A good idea may be to travel by plane, although it is worth remembering that flights to the south of Italy can be expensive and the network of connections is irregular. For many people a better idea seems to be bus to Naples, specifically the Sindbad coach, going from Poland to Naples. Traveling by coach is safe, comfortable and conducive to relaxation, which is a good prelude to a vacation in Naples.
