Narbona is located in southern France, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, situated on the Mediterranean Sea, near the Spanish border. This picturesque city was founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC.
One of Narbonne's most treasured sights is the magnificent Gothic cathedral of Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur, located in the heart of the city. This magnificent, soaring temple is very different from the Gothic monuments of southern France. It is one of the tallest Gothic buildings in France. The edifice with a choir placed at the height of 40 meters dominates over the restored town. Construction of the church began in 1272. The cornerstone was sent from Rome by Pope Clement IV himself (former Archbishop of Narbonne). The cathedral was never completed. Inside the church, attention is drawn to the great Baroque high altar, the 18th-century organ, 14th-century stained-glass windows, and tapestries from Aubusson.
Adjacent to the cathedral is the vast complex of the former archbishop's palace (Palais des Archevêques), now the seat of the municipal government and the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire. It is divided into the Old Palace (12th-13th century) and the New Palace (14th century). The towers date from the Middle Ages, while the building between the left and middle towers was built in the 19th century by E. Viollet-le-Duc. The museum contains, among other things, the apartments of Louis XVI, Roman mosaics, French, Dutch, Italian paintings In the Old Palace, in the former chapel, the Archaeological Museum.
Les Halles - built in an innovative way with stone and steel, the hall is one of the more interesting buildings of Narbonne. Erected in the early 20th century, the building is still considered one of the most interesting French old department stores. In addition to purely aesthetic impressions, we can stock up here with fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and cheese, and of course wine.
Horreum L'Horreum - is the only Roman monument in Narbonne. A very interesting underground building was used as a warehouse for agricultural products. Currently, there are two galleries made of stone with side niches. To introduce the right atmosphere, the whole thing is interestingly illuminated.
Other important monuments of Narbonne include the 19th century neo-gothic building of the town hall (Hôtel de Ville), the chapel of St. Magdalene (Chapelle de la Made. Magdalena (Chapelle de la Madeleine), the Carmelite convent (Couvent des Carmélites), the Romanesque house of Narbonne (Maison romane de Narbonne), located near the city abbey of Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide (Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide) and a short stretch of the famous Via Domitia - the first Roman road built in Gaul in the second century BC.A.D.
Narbona also boasts a 5 km long beach with fine golden sand. Beach lovers are sure to be delighted. Wine lovers, on the other hand, can taste delicious products from local vineyards.
