Nisko is a small town in Podkarpackie Voivodeship, located on the San River and Sandomierz Forest, not far from Stalowa Wola, Sandomierz and Janow Lubelski.
Nisko and its surroundings is a very attractive area for archaeologists, so far about 150 sites with traces of prehistoric cultures have been identified here. Archaeological research has shown that the settlement of this area dates back much earlier than 1439, when the first written record of Nisko appeared. Discoveries on the so-called "Skrzyńska Góra" date back to the Neolithic Age.
Although Nisko is a small town, it has quite a lot to offer.
What is worth seeing in and around Nisko?
Most of the material culture monuments in the area date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the most interesting are:
-The manor-park complex in Zarzecz near Nisk, with a 19th-century classicist manor, owned by the Hofmokl-Ostrowski family in the early 20th century. It was here that Bronisława Ostrowska (née Brzezicka, 1881-1928), a well-known translator and poet of the Young Poland movement, spent some time, the author of the poetry Opale, Chusty ofiarne, Aniołom dźwięku, Pierścień życia and the prose Książka jutra, W starym mirrze and Rozmyślania. These works contain many descriptions of Zarzecz and the surrounding area. The poet's daughter, Halina Ostrowska-Grabska describes these pages in her book "Bric a brac". "Bric a brac".
-The parish church, rectory and bell tower in Raclawice - objects of the oldest parish in the area, under the invocation of Bishop Stanislaus, established between 1252 and 1288. Next to the rectory there is a huge small-leaved lime tree, a monument of nature, with a trunk circumference exceeding 6 meters.
-Manor park in Racławice - Waldekówka with natural monuments: a common maple and a pedunculate oak.
-Chapel in Nisk - Warchoły built in 1884 as a chapel in the summer residence of Marie and Olivier hr. Ressëquier.
-Chapel in Nisk - Malce from 1910, now part of the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland.
-The former Sopot farmstead in Nisk - Malce, on which there is a statue of the Holy Family founded by the Ressëquiers in 1887, recently thoroughly restored thanks to the efforts of the Malce community.
-The rectory and parish church in Nisk built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Since October 3, 1998, the church has been elevated to the dignity of the Shrine of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
-Figure of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Nisk erected in 1907. by Marie and Olivier Count Ressëguier to commemorate the dedication of the Nisku estate to the Divine Heart.
- Raclawice Parish Cemetery. A local necropolis with many graves from the 19th century including those of insurgents from the period of partitioned Poland. One of them is the grave of Jan Gisges Gawronski (1837 - 1890), grandfather of the famous writer and poet Jan Maria Gisges born in Nisk (1914 - 1983). He was the author of, among others, the novels "Thistles", "Spadek", "Wyklęty", "Pamięć serca", "Borelowski", "Lasowiacy", "Ptaki, ptaki", as well as the poetry "Pierwsza miłość", "Pora dojrzewania", "Jadącym naprzód", "Przeczuwanie". In almost each of these books the writer referred to the time when he was in these parts. Nisko and its surroundings are very interesting places to visit.
