Pompeii is one of the most recognizable attractions of the ancient world, and one of the most visited tourist destinations in Italy. What makes so many people choose to visit Pompeii every year? The history of this city is truly unique in the world. Its origins date back to the 7th century BC. In ancient times it was one of the most important ports of the Roman Empire - a rich, bustling city, famous for its trade and (reportedly) the debauched lifestyle of its inhabitants.
The life of the city came to an abrupt end, all due to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The three-day eruption of the nearby volcano completely destroyed buildings and killed residents. Glowing rocks, ash and poisonous gases annihilated Pompeii and other surrounding towns (such as Herculaneum). At the same time, the ash and pumice preserved Pompeii for centuries, so that the monuments there retained their original appearance and were not eroded by the teeth of time. In other words, what has become a curse for the inhabitants of the ancient city is at the same time a blessing for modern tourists. Deconstruction of the city from a several-meter layer of ash began only in 1748, and archaeological work continues to this day. In 1997, Pompeii was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The city is located on the west coast of Italy, south of Naples, from where you can get to Pompeii by train. Travel time is about 30 minutes. When planning a trip from Poland, there are two means of public transportation available. The first is by plane, which can prove to be an expensive and inflexible solution. A cheaper option may be to travel by Sindbad coach. Our modern fleet of vehicles guarantees the utmost comfort even during the longest journey and is a great prelude to a vacation in Italy.
How much time should we spend on visiting Pompeii? It all depends on our attitude to history and awareness of the subject. What for some will be a monotonous landscape from a bygone era, for others will be quite a treat and an authentic bridge between antiquity and modernity. The first group will only need 2-3 hours to visit the excavations, while more committed tourists will be able to spend up to a dozen hours in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
