This is the largest city in the Suwałki region, being a great base for trips to Suwałki Landscape Park and Wigry National Park. Suwałki is a town in Podlaskie Voivodeship (Province), situated on the Czarna Hańcza River. The town was founded in the 17th century in the place where once was the settlement founded by the Camaldolese order of Wigry. From these times remains of the fortified buildings have been preserved. The dramatic turns of history have clearly marked the urban landscape, which can be seen when visiting Suwałki. At present, it is the second largest center of the voivodeship and the cultural center of the Suwałki Region.

First of all, visitors to the city should pay attention to the well-preserved Old Town buildings in classicist style. We are talking here primarily about the houses stretching around the market and Kosciuszko Street. Nearby there are also St. Alexander's Concathedral and the Town Hall. In the aforementioned concathedral we can see, among others, coming from the eighteenth century figures of patrons of the city: St. Benedict and St. Romuald. The Arkadia Reservoir, with a large municipal beach, awaits tourists. The poetess Maria Konopnicka was born in Suwałki. Today, her family home houses a museum dedicated to the artist and her works. To commemorate Konopnicka's books, 10 dwarf figurines have been placed around the city. Fans of museum collections can also visit the District Museum, which collects exhibits describing the history of Suwalki and the Suwalszczyzna region.
When in the area, it is worth visiting the ruins of a neo-Gothic palace in Dowspuda. It is a recommended place for romantic walks, away from the tourist noise. In the summer, a cruise on the "Kamedula" ship on Lake Wigry can be an interesting proposition. In the winter season, you may come to Suwałki and its surroundings for a sleigh ride or cross-country skiing training.
Suwalki is easiest to get to by car. There is an expressway 61 and a national road 8, while non-motorised travellers can use rail and road transport. Suwalki buses and buses connect Suwalki with other towns and villages in the region, which is especially useful during the holiday season, when lakes are visited by holidaymakers from all over Poland. Choosing Suwalki as your base, by bus you can reach the most attractive places in the region, such as Augustow. The best place to start exploring the region is at the PKS Suwalki bus station.
