Szczecin - a city in northwestern Poland, the capital and also the largest city of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is worth mentioning that Szczecin is the third largest city in Poland in terms of area (behind Warsaw and Krakow). The area of the city is more than 300km2, behind Szczecin are cities such as Łódź and Wrocław.
Szczecin-although it has a seaport, there are repair shipyards, yacht contrary to assumptions, it is not located on the sea. It has about 100km to the coastline, it is the location of the Szczecin Lagoon and the Oder River, the second largest river in Poland, that gives Szczecin access to the Baltic Sea.
Access to the sea, Szczecin makes great use of. It is here that the famous "Tall Ship Races"-this prestigious event has had its finale in Szczecin three times. Beautiful sailing ships, large ones with several masts and smaller ones, entered the city moored at the quay in Szczecin. The fourth edition is planned for 2021, at the end of July and the beginning of August, if the event comes to fruition it is estimated that sea vessels from about 40 countries of the world will arrive.
The architecture of Szczecin is specific and interesting. This is because the city does not have a classic market square, which we know from most Polish cities. The city center is characterized by large traffic circles and streets. The city has a characteristic star-shaped layout, which is characterized by a large number of traffic circles from which successive streets radiate. This characteristic street layout is often compared to Paris.
An interesting and representative part of Szczecin is the Wały Chrobrego-an observation deck 500m long lying on the Oder River. It is here that sailing ships from the Tall Ship Races are moored. Near the Chrobry Embankment are the characteristic buildings of the Maritime Academy, the building of the Provincial Office, as well as the National Museum in Szczecin.
In the very center of the city is the Port Gate- a characteristic Baroque city gate has become part of the climate of the city, as well as the Royal Gate- a city gate built in the 18th century. on the occasion of the seizure of the city by Prussia.
For culture lovers, we recommend a visit to the Szczecin Philharmonic - this distinctive ultra-modern building was built in 2014 and has become part of the skyline of Szczecin.
