Tomaszow Lubelski - Tourist attractions and history of the town
The origins of the town date back to the end of the 16th century, when it was founded by Chancellor Jan Zamojski and named after the family coat of arms - Jelitow. In 1613, however, it was decided to rename the town to Tomaszów in honour of Jan Zamoyski's son, Tomasz. Today, going to Tomaszów Lubelski we can admire many tourist attractions. The Communist Terror Memorial Museum - the place intrigues with its cold, heavy atmosphere evoking memories of atrocities that took place during the communist era. The museum has recreated the interrogation room, profiles of torturers and prisoners. The museum is open from Monday to Friday and admission is free. John Peter Regional Museum - the museum was established in 1962 and was founded by a local doctor - John Peter, who decided to organize an exhibition of private collections in the hospital where he worked. When a few years later his collection was taken away by the state, the location of the museum changed several times and it was finally located on the current Zamojska Street. In the museum one can admire the archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions. An Inanimate Nature Reserve "Piekiełko"- in the nature reserve located near the town geology lovers can see erratic boulders and other geological outcrops left here by the glacier and measuring up to 10 meters high. The reserve got its name from legends about the origin of the boulders. One of them tells about a girl who refused to give her hand to the devil dressed as a farmhand. Lucifer decided to take revenge and covered the church with boulders while she was getting married to her chosen one. Just as he was about to take his revenge, a hen suddenly crowed. The devil lost the power of hell and the boulders flew into the field. To this day, none of the locals take the stone from there, as the superstition that it brings bad luck persists. There are also rumors that the reserve is haunted at noon and at midnight.
