What to see in Lithuania? - Vilnius

The capital of Lithuania, also because of its proximity to the Polish border, is a frequent destination for Poles. It stands out primarily for its baroque architecture and multitude of green spaces. Tourists appreciate its picturesque location, charming Old Town and affordable prices for a European capital. The Old Town in Vilnius is the largest of all the Baltics. It can delight you with its colorful tenement houses, cobbled streets, where the walls of the houses are decorated with small works of art, for example, on Literatų or Bernardinų Street. Vilnius is a very colorful city - you can encounter art there at every turn, for example, in the Republic of Užupis, which is the smallest district of Vilnius, once inhabited by a poor population, now a district, or rather a state of artists. It is a must to see the only surviving city gate well known to Poles from the Invocation of "Pan Tadeusz" - the Gates of Dawn. Inside is a small chapel with an image of Our Lady of Mercy. Also worth a visit are the Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus, the ruins of the castle on Gediminas Hill, and Vilnius University - which is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It is where Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki and Czesław Miłosz studied.

Kovno

It is an interesting city where a long and rich history is clearly visible. Wooden houses there sit side by side with modernist buildings, interspersed with architectural remnants of the Soviet era and the now so popular street art.Newsworthy is Kaunas' Old Town with its colorful tenement houses and the interesting building of the city hall, known by locals as the "white swan", and the city's oldest street, Vilniaus gatye, with its many restaurants, cafes and stores. In addition, it is worth seeing the remains of a 14th-century castle, once used as a defense against the Teutonic Knights and hosting many Polish kings. An interesting tourist attraction in the city is the historic funikular, or ropeway, which consists of two carriages - one you can take to Alexota Hill and the other to Zielona Gora. Both places offer beautiful views of the city - Green Mountain is home to the modernist Basilica of the Resurrection with an extensive observation deck. Adam Mickiewicz lived and worked in Kaunas for several years. Here you can visit his museum, find an intriguing neon sign with a quote from "Konrad Wallenrod," or stroll along the lower nearby Oak Grove, where there is a stone engraved with the poet's initials and the year 1823.

Mountain of Crosses

This is a popular pilgrimage site made famous by Pope John Paul II, who visited in 1993. It is located near the village of Meshkuta. In 1430, a shrine with a large cross was erected there to commemorate the reception of baptism by the Samogitians. In 1831, after the fall of the November Uprising, more crosses and objects of faith began to be brought there in large numbers. Since then, people have continued to come there and leave crosses, rosaries and other symbolic objects while praying for various intentions.

Baltic Sahara

This is how the dunes on the Curonian Spit are described, a 50-kilometer section of which is in Lithuania.
