Bergamo is a city in Northern Italy in the Lombardy region lying at the southern foothills of the Bergamo Alps. It was founded around 390 BC by the Celts as Bergheim ("city on a hill"), and was occupied by the Romans in the 1st century BC and renamed Bergomum. In 575 Bergamo was established as the capital of the principality of the Longobards. The historic part of the city, which is so popular with tourists, is located on a hill, which can be reached by a funicular railroad. There you can find many valuable and delightful monuments and feel the atmosphere of a small Italian town. However, when visiting Bergamo, you can find accommodations at a better price primarily in the Lower Town.

When visiting Bergamo, it is worth noting the 16th century defensive walls surrounding the historic part of the city (Città Alta). The focal point in this part of town is Piazza Vecchia with the Palazzo della Ragione and the Town Tower (Campanone), which dates back to the 12th century and is over 50 meters high - the best vantage point in the old town. Also worth seeing are the Cathedral and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Particularly noteworthy are the richly decorated interiors of the latter temple.

An attraction a bit off to the side that many people overlook is the hill of San Vigilio with a beautiful panorama of Città Alta, all of Bergamo and the surrounding countryside. And it's a place worth visiting, especially since you can help yourself by taking the Funicolare S. railroad. Vigilio, whose station is just outside the city walls, 500 meters from Piazza Vecchia. On the 496-meter hill are the ruins of a castle with a tower, as well as a small park and fountain.

Commuting to Bergamo

Bergamo is best reached by bus or plane, due to its size and low fares. Bergamo airport is 6 kilometers from the city center, and less than 50 kilometers from Milan. Therefore, there are often buses from it taking tourists directly to the fashion city, bypassing Bergamo. What to do once you reach Zywiec by bus

If you are considering an extended stay in or around Zywiec, especially during the holiday season, a trip to Lake Zywiec is a must. It is a reservoir created in 1966. In order for it to be created, several villages had to be depopulated and flooded, including Zarzecza, Tresna, and Stary Zywiec.

In the part of Tresna that was not flooded, a dam and hydroelectric power plant were erected.

Zywiec has a municipal beach, although it still lacks infrastructure. Therefore, plan an outing to the water with your own provisions.

A regatta is organized on the waters of Lake Zywiec in August, a memorial to Adam Banaszek, commander of the Bielsko Yacht Club, who died in 1992 while sailing the "Dar Bielsko".

Zywiec is located in the middle of the Beskid Mountains. The Beskid Zywiec is of course surrounded by it, but right next to it you will also find the Beskid Slaski or Beskid Maly. If you go further south, you can hit the Slovak Beskid, while west of Zywiec is the Silesian-Moravian Beskid. If you're a novice hiker, it's worth climbing Skrzyczne, the highest peak in the Silesian Beskid, which rises more than 1,200 meters above sea level. In Beskid Maly you must climb, if that's the right term, Czupel (just 933 meters above sea level). In Beskid Zywiecki, Babia Gora awaits you with 1,725 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in the area.

There are several roads leading to the summit. One of them is the Akademiks' Pass. When deciding on this particular route, you need to be aware that it's a one-way road, and before the summit itself you will face a short climb over rocks using chains attached to the rocks. Therefore, if you manifest a fear of heights, you should consider a slightly longer, but easier route.

The city is located in the Zywiec Basin in southern Poland, next to Lake Zywiec. The seat of the Zywiec district government is located here.
