Chernihiv (ukr. Чернігів) is one of the oldest and historically most important cities in Ukraine, located on the Desna River, about 150 km north of Kyiv. It is the capital of the Chernihiv region and has a population of about 286,000.
The first mention of Chernihiv dates back to 907 and was recorded in the "Novel of bygone years," one of the oldest chronicles of Kyiv Rus. In the Middle Ages, the city was the capital of the Duchy of Chernihiv and the second most important center after Kyiv.
Chernihiv is famous for its numerous religious and historical monuments:
Transfiguration Church - the oldest Christian temple in Ukraine, built in the early 11th century.
Eletsky Monastery - an important center of Orthodox spirituality with a rich history.
Saint Paraskevna Pyatnitsa Church - built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, an example of Kyiv Rus' period sacred architecture.
Dytynec - a former fortified town, the heart of historic Chernihiv.
