Kamenets Podolsky was probably founded in the 11th century (Armenian chronicles prove so). In the 12th and 13th centuries the stronghold, belonging to the Halicko-Vlodzimierska Rus, was located on the site of the present castle, and its sub-grounds in part of today's Old Town.
