Glogow is located in the northern part of the Lower Silesian province. This medium-sized city, with a population of about 65,000 people, is the seat of Glogow County and the Glogow rural municipality. The geographical location of Glogow is also noteworthy. The city is located on the Oder River, about halfway between two landscape parks - Przemykow and Przemęt. It is about 130 kilometers from the provincial capital, Wrocław. A much shorter distance (about 60 km) Glogowians have to cover to get to Zielona Gora. Other major urban centers in the region include Leszno, Rawicz, Lubin and Boleslawiec.
This is a town with a very rich history, dating back to the 10th century. Among other things, the city made its mark in Polish history with the heroic "Defense of Glogow" of 1109. City rights were granted to the town in 1253.During the Thirty Years' War Glogow became a fortress, which was repeatedly captured and defended by Austrians, Prussians, Swedes, Russians and French in the following decades. The 18th century brought further changes - from 1740 the city was within the borders of the Kingdom of Prussia, and from 1871 within the German Empire. World War II proved tragic for Glogow - its buildings were 95% destroyed. The flywheel of development in socialist Poland turned out to be the finding of abundant copper deposits, which led to a boom in industry and an influx of people willing to work.
The city's rich history can be seen in Glogow at every turn. City authorities have restored the Castle of the Dukes of Glogow, rebuilt the town hall including the symbolic tower. Work is underway on the reconstruction of the Collegiate Church. The residential development of the Old/New Town, including modern townhouses built in the 20th on the plans of the old streets, also testifies to the transformations that have taken place here. Exploring the city's impressive history is best begun at the Tourist Information Center located in the Old Town. Recommended by local officials as a way to explore what is most valuable in Glogow is the City Tourist Route. This is an approximately two-hour walk, during which we visit the most important monuments of Glogow.
An important means of transportation in the city is the Glogow bus. The city has a decently developed public transport network. You can check the schedule of buses Glogow at least on the website of the City Hall. Intercity connections are provided by PKP and long-distance buses connecting Glogow with other important towns in the region. Depending on the operator, bus stops are located in two places: 2 Jedności Robotniczej Street or directly at the PKP train station. Both locations are a slight distance from the city center, making bus Glogow a convenient and recommendable means of transportation for tourists. There are also coaches from Glogow that operate international connections, including to Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Austria and Ukraine. All this makes the city an important transportation hub of the region, to various parts of which Glogow buses take passengers.
