Nowy Sącz is located in the central part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is less than 100 kilometers from the region's capital, Krakow. To get to another important city in Lesser Poland - Tarnów, you need to cover a distance of more than 60 km. Nowy Sacz is the capital of the Sadecczyzna region and a former provincial town. More than 83,000 people live here. The town was founded in 1292, making it one of the oldest towns in Lesser Poland.
Nowy Sącz offers its visitors many sights -about which more in a moment-and is a brilliant base for exploring the natural attractions region. To the north, Nowy Sącz is bordered by the charming Rożnowskie Foothills with its vast Rożnowskie Lake, and to the south of the city run three large mountain ranges: the Beskid Sądecki, Beskid Niski and Beskid Wyspowy. This provides unfettered access to hiking trails, which can be penetrated by bicycle, on skis or on foot. The aforementioned Lake Rożnowskie and the Dunajec River flowing through the western part of the city offer considerable potential for water sports. Further afield are Lake Czorsztyńskie and Lake Klimkowskie.
With its centuries-old history and attractive location in the Sącz Basin, Nowy Sącz is frequently visited by tourists, practically at any time of the year. Those traveling to the area should remember the address: 2 Szwecka Street, where the Tourist Information Center, part of the Malopolska Tourist Information System, is located.
The most important sights of Nowy Sącz include the eclectic Town Hall located in the central part of the market square - the main square of the city, the ruins of the Royal Castle and the nearby synagogue, as well as the Gothic House from the 15th century. Fans of religious sites should not complain about a lack of excitement here. Among those awaiting the faithful and visitors to New Sącz temples are the St. Margaret's collegiate basilica, the 13th century Franciscan monastery complex, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Jesuit monastery, St. Roch's Church, St. Helen's Church and St. Casimir's Church. Those with a taste for rather secular attractions should visit the Galician Town and the Sącz Ethnographic Park. Both sites are located outside the city center (DK28 in the eastern direction). A visit to them is a journey back in time to the traditions, culture and rituals of the ethnographic groups that inhabited the region in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Fans of discovering new flavors should also be satisfied with a stay in the capital of the Sącz region. Most recommended places are, of course, in the area of the market square. Among the most recommended restaurants of Nowy Sącz are:
