According to many people, Opole is the most singing city in Poland. The town owes its musical fame, of course, to the National Festival of Polish Song, held annually in the local Millennium Amphitheater. The history of the event dates back to 1963, but Opole's roots are much older. The incorporation of Opole took place in 1217, and the first mention of a stronghold here dates back to the 9th century.Today, the city is the capital of the Opole Voivodeship, home to some 130,000 people, and an important cultural, religious and academic center.
What Opole sights can it offer visitors? A great variety! Let's start with the artistic ones. The Museum of Polish Song and the Avenue of the Stars of Polish Song are located here. Tourists can also enjoy the National Center of Polish Song and the amphitheater, where the iconic festival takes place. Lovers of the sixth muse should also be interested in the castle pond with a playing fountain and the University Hill, where we can find sculptures of contemporary artists (e.g., Kofta, Osiecka, Niemen, Grechuta). The Opole Philharmonic opens its doors to music lovers.
Fans of museum art should not complain of boredom either. Waiting for them in Opole are: Opole Village Museum, Contemporary Art Gallery, Solidarity Memorial Chamber, Central Museum of Prisoners of War, Opole Silesia Museum and the Upper Castle. In turn, those who prefer contact with nature are recommended to visit Bolko Island, Barlicki Pond and parks: Opole's 800th anniversary and the Oder River Park. A cruise on the Oder River by cruise ship is also an interesting option. Families with children visiting Opole should check out the offer of swimming pools (Wodna Nuta, Błękitna Fala), the Opole Puppet and Actor Theater and the local ZOO.
A stroll through the city should not miss the market square, which features an impressive town hall with a bright façade and Baroque townhouses. Another important monument of Opole is the Gothic Piast Tower. Measuring about 42 meters, this landmark of Opole is a great vantage point overlooking the Old Town area. Tourists, especially during the summer season, are attracted to the charming Opole Venice. Opole also has several impressive churches. Highlights on the city's sacred map include: Cathedral of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, Holy Trinity Church and the Franciscan monastery, as well as the Church on the Hill.
Also near Opole there are buildings worthy of recommendation. We are talking, for example, about the palace in Moszna, the Niemodlin Ponds complex, the Turawa lakes or the Science and Entertainment Park in Krasiejów.
