Zhytomyr is a city of over 250,000 people located on the Teterev River in Ukraine. It was founded in 884 and is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine in terms of history and culture. The city has a Polish cemetery, one of the largest outside the Polish border, where the parents of Ignacy Paderewski and the family of Stanislaw Moniuszko are buried. According to many sources, Zhytomyr has the largest concentration of citizens of Polish descent in Ukraine.
When in Zhytomyr, it's worth visiting the only cosmonautics museum in Ukraine, named after the famous rocket and space systems designer Sergey Korolov. It is Korolov who is considered the "father" of Soviet cosmonautics and was responsible for the first manned space flight, which took place in 1961 - this cosmonaut was Yuri Gagarin.
In Zhytomyr every tourist can also see St. Sophia Cathedral, built in 1748, St. John of Dukla Church or the Baptist Church, which used to be an evangelical church. There are also many other places worth visiting, such as the present Philharmonic Hall, which was built in 1808 and used to be the famous Zhytomyr Theater, a water tower dating back to 1898 or the bishop's palace built in the first half of the 19th century.
With its countless tourist attractions, Zhytomyr is undoubtedly a city worth visiting. Despite the fact that the main branches of the city are metallurgical and engineering industries, walking around the city you will find a large number of monuments, museums and charming places such as the historic Castle Hill.
