Lozanne is a city and the capital of the Swiss canton of Vaud in the west of the country. It lies on three hills on the northern shore of Lake Geneva and has been a sizable settlement of great commercial importance since ancient times primarily due to its location on the route of an important route from Italy to Gaul.

The square itself is where most of the old town's streets converge. It is home to the city's oldest fountain and an antique clock that presents scenes from local history every hour.
