Strzelce Opolskie is a town located in Opolskie Province on the northeastern slope of St. Anne's Mountain. The town is located about halfway between the thriving urban centers of Opole and Gliwice. Less than 20 thousand people live here. The name of the place originates from the name of riflemen, duke hunters who hunted game in the surrounding forests. The etymology of the town is commemorated by a monument on the Market Square below the Town Hall. The name of the town changed depending on who ruled the local lands, and in its present form it has been functioning since 1945.
First mentions of the settlement in this place come from the 13th century. The following decades brought changes of the town's rulers (the Opole, Nemodlín and Piast dukes, as well as Austrian rule) and new buildings, which today are tourist attractions of the town. The most recognizable landmarks of Strzelce Opolskie are: the town walls, the fighter's monument in the Market Square, the tower, the ruins of the Piast Castle, the Town Hall, the watchtower, St. Barbara's Church, St. Lawrence's Church and the castle gate. Those wishing to explore the history of the city and the region also have at their disposal: The Museum of Sacred Art and the Regional Chamber of Traditions, the Chamber of Forestry Education, and the Chamber of Fire Fighting Traditions. Most of these monuments are located in the town center, north of the national road 94 that cuts through Strzelce Opolskie. A glance at the map is enough to notice that the town has much more to offer to tourists. South of the DK 94 there is a large Renard Park - one of the most importanttourist attractions in Strzelce Opolskie. This area is an ideal place for nature recreation, which can be a good interlude to city sightseeing.
Speaking of parks, it is also worth visiting the nearby Góra Świętej Anny Landscape Park. It is a place where you can enjoy paths among volcanic rocks, lush vegetation, nature reserves and monuments, as well as a majestic monastery at the top of the hill. This place is steeped in history associated with the Silesian uprisings. In the area there are also other natural objects: the protected landscape area "Stobrawsko-Turawskie Forests", the reserve of xerothermic plants "Ligota Dolna", the forest reserve "Płuźnica" and "Tęczynów". There are also bicycle trails in the vicinity. The Strzelce Opolskie Cultural Centre is active in the town and organizes events for children and adults.
To have energy for sightseeing, it is worth visiting one of the local eateries. The city boasts of several facilities of this type. Among the most recommended establishments are the Ratuszowa restaurant, Bella Italia restaurant, Stary Młyn restaurant, Urszulka ice cream parlour, Krakus restaurant and AlterEgo restaurant. In Srodmiescie there are also many fast food outlets. A decently developed accommodation base awaits the guests. Tourists can choose among accommodation of various standards: hotels, private accommodation and agritourism.
Tourists going to this city, especially those relying on public transport, should check the location of the PKP railway station and its bus counterpart - the Strzelce Opolskie bus station, i.e. the two main transfer hubs in the city.
